RCM announces 2012-13 Season at Koerner Hall

The Royal Conservatory has announced the line up for the 2012-13 season at Koerner Hall.

“The 2012-13 season of concerts also marks the 125th Anniversary of the Royal Conservatory, so we begin by looking back at one of our illustrious alumni who, to this day, remains the most iconic Canadian musician – Glenn Gould – and we view him through a modern lens we are sure he would enjoy; we present Valery Gergiev, one of the world’s great Maestros; three specially curated series will unfold over the course of the season that allow audiences to dig a little deeper into the musical life of Montreal, Cuba, and the legacy of Dizzy Gillespie," said Executive Director of Performing Arts, Mervon Mehta during the announcement. "Audiences will have an opportunity to see some old friends and be introduced to the brightest new jazz, classical, and world music talents on the planet, including the best from across Canada.”

The season kicks off with Glenn Gould's Birthday BACHanalia on September 24, 2012. The show features excerpts from Goldberg Variations by harpist Sylvain Blassel, a flute sonata played on harmonica by Howard Levy, bluegrass inspired fiddle improvisations by Mark O'Connor, Oscar Peterson's 'Salute to Bach' featuring the Dave Young Trio, a South Asian jam session with Trichy & Suba Sankaran and Autorickshaw, and more.

This is followed by a salute to Scotiabank Nuit Blanche on September 29, followed by the Season gala on October 26 and ending on February 2 with comedic cabaret act Meow Meow.

Jazz shows during this year's season include a series of performances celebrating what would have been Dizzy Gillespie's 90th birthday. The "Devoted to Dizzy" series begins with Gillespie protege Jon Faddis. This is followed by a concert by four of North America's top horn players, Jens Lindeman, Doc Severinsen, Guido Basso and Wycliffe Gordon. Next, Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band pay tribute to Dizzy's "Cubano Be, Cubano Bop" along with trumpeter Christian Scott.

Former Gillespie sidemen, Giovanni Hidalgo and Claudio Roditi, join two Toronto-based bands, Dave Young-Terry Promane Octet and the Heavyweights Brass band for a show and Danilo Perez rounds out the series with his trio featuring John Patitucci and Brian Blade.

Other jazz shows this season include performances by Chick Corea and Gary Burton, Bela Fleck with the Marcus Roberts Trio and Allen Toussaint with David Bromberg.
