Bill Merritt A musician’s who’s-who planned for one of city’s best bass players

Several of Winnipeg’s best-loved musicians and personalities have joined forces to organize, promote and perform at a Benefit concert Friday, Jan. 14, 2011 for one of the city’s most legendary musicians. Bill Merritt, one of the best bass players to ever come out of the city, has been recently diagnosed with a brain tumour after having survived cancer about 17 years ago, when he was told he only had five years to live.

The benefit concert, called Bitter Pill: The Benefit Concert for Bill Merritt, was officially launched by a group of musicians last month at the Norwood Hotel. More than $3,000 in donations was raised from the evening.

Donations can now be made online at or in person at the January benefit concert at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, where Be Bop Beluga, The Bobcats with Danny Casavant & Bobby White, The Duhks, Fabulous George & the Zodiacs, Graham Shaw & the Sincere Serenaders, Rocki Rolletti, Swing Soniq and Mood Jga Jga will perform. The night will be hosted by Al Simmons and Rick Neufeld. All proceeds will go towards supporting the cost of living for Bill and his wife Luci as Bill undergoes treatment in his current battle with cancer.

Bill Merritt played with many legendary bands during the city’s golden age of rock n’ roll in the 1960’s and 70’s including Mood Jga Jga, Fabulous George and the Zodiacs, Be Bop Beluga, Rocki Rolletti and Prairie Dog. Merritt was the general manager of the Winnipeg Folk Festival and guided the iconic annual concert event through its early years into the late 1980’s. He was also a founder of the Winnipeg International Children’s Festival and greatly contributed to the formation of the Winnipeg music scene.
