Ross Porter Interviews Archie Alleyne

Archie Alleyne

Archie Alleyne is one of Canada’s best known, best loved jazz drummers. He’s played with great vocalists like Billie Holiday and Jackie Richardson, is leader of the hard bop band Kollage and was Music Director of Jazz Lives last year at Convocation Hall where he performed in front of 1600 jazz fans.

On top of his musical chops, Archie is also a mentor and philanthropist. He has often said “without the past, there is no future” and backs that up by inspiring and assisting talented youth to making a career in music. His organization, The Archie Alleyne Scholarship Fund has provided scholarships and bursaries for countless young musicians; many who have gone on to do big things and some of which are still in school studying. To date, 15 scholarships have been awarded!

On December 2 at Asylum Arts (100 Carlaw Avenue) there will be a showcase of some of these talented youths. Special guests include JAZZ.FM91 President and CEO Ross Porter, and jazz greats Don Francks and Jackie Richardson. Jaymz Bee emcees. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased through the website. Of course, you can donate anytime to this fund at www.aasf.ca
