ARTS TORONTO - April 1st Edition

This Sunday from 8-9 a.m., it’s another edition of Arts Toronto with your host Mark Wigmore on Jazz FM91

This episode:

This week saw the Canadian Premiere of one of the most anticipated shows within the Mirvish season. The new musical version of An American in Paris arrived in Toronto after a critically acclaimed opening in France, and a multi Tony Award-winning run on Broadway. It runs at the Princess of Wales Theatre through April 29th. This production builds on the Oscar-winning classic film that starred Gene Kelly, but takes the dance elements to the next level, with choreography that borrows from tap and ballet. The score of An American in Paris includes Gershwin standards like "I Got Rhythm," "’S Wonderful," and "But Not For Me". McGee Maddox of National Ballet of Canada fame plays Gene Kelly's part, Jerry Mulligan. After training in Houston, McGee made his way to Toronto in 2009, becoming a principal dancer in 2014. His performances have been enjoyed in productions like Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker, Hamlet, and The Man in Black. And the character Lise Dassin is portrayed by Allison Walsh. She was a part of the Paris and Broadway productions of An American in Paris. Before that, she was with the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, made an appearance at the White House with the Washington Ballet, and was in the cast of the Starz Network television show, Flesh and Bone. McGee and Allison visit the Jazz FM91 studios to explain this lavish production.

And for the last several decades, Ori Dagan has built his reputation as one of the hardest working jazz musicians in the city. His signature baritone vocals and scat skills have been witnessed at countless concerts and gigs and can be enjoyed on three full length albums including last year’s critically acclaimed Nathaniel: A Tribute to Nat King Cole. He has receiving prestigious honors like ‘one of the best male vocalists in the city’ thanks to Now Magazine readers. He’s also a winner of a Toronto Independent Music Award, several Global Music Awards and was named Canada’s Next Top Crooner by the CBC. He’s also one of the most active artists working in Toronto, supporting fellow artists, helping to curate the Kensington Market Jazz Festival, and collaborating with the likes of Heather Bambrick, Alex Pangman and the legendary Sheila Jordan. Ori just got back from performing at South By Southwest in Austin Texas last month. And breaking news. Ori has just been added to Jazz FM91’s Jazz Lives concert lineup. He will perform alongside Alex Pangman at our annual fundraiser at Koerner Hall. We are celebrating 100 years of Nat King Cole, and Ori will bring his musical expertise to this special night. Ori speaks to Mark about Nat King Cole in a candid conversation.
