ARTS TORONTO - March 4th Edition

This Sunday from 8-9 a.m., it’s another edition of Arts Toronto with your host Mark Wigmore on Jazz FM91

This episode: It's been another long awards season. On Sunday, the celebrations for films released in 2017 come to a conclusion. The 90th annual Academy Awards will be handed out in Los Angeles. This year's front runner is The Shape of Water, the Sci-Fi love story that was shot right here in Toronto by director Guillermo Del Toro. It lead the pack at the Golden Globes, and it leads again Sunday with 13 Oscar nominations, both in the major and technical categories. Other films to look out for this weekend, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Lady Bird, The Phantom Thread, Mudbound, Get Out, and Dunkirk. It’s also been a year plagued with controversy in Hollywood. The #MeToo and #TimesUp movements were spurred on by the revelation that Hollywood producer and movie mogul Harvey Weinstein had a long history of sexual misconduct behavior and abuse. His banishment from La La Land introduced a noisy debate that has rocked Tinseltown and cranked a cultural shift in all walks of western life. Joining Mark Wigmore in studio for a broad discussion about the year in film is Now Magazine senior film writer Norm Wilner, and Globe and Mail Lead film critic and culture columnist, Kate Taylor.

All that, and beautiful jazz for a Sunday morning.
