Beloved family entertainer Fred Penner has been sharing his music for over 40 years. He got his start thanks to the success of his ubiquitous hit “The Cat Came Back” which spawned a long running television show. CBC's Fred Penner's Place which wrapped in 1997. Since then, some 4 albums, countless concerts and a slew of special projects... and all those kids who watched him in the beginning; they are in their 30s and 40s now. Those who remember and love his music are now deemed "Fred Heads". In April, Fred released a star-studded album titled “Hear The Music”. Not only does it show Fred’s evolution as a musician, but it cashes in on some of the Fred Head goodwill and features a who’s who of the Canadian music scene; from Ron Sexsmith and Basia Bulat, to Jackie Richardson, Alex Cuba and the Penner family. Mark Wigmore speaks to Fred Penner about his life in music in the Jazz FM91 studios.

Dave Bidini likes to where his signature fedoras, but he wears many hats. He’s one of the founding members of The Rheostatics, a celebrated author, a film producer, and a cultural commentator. In 2015, he moved to the Northwest Territories for a summer to work on The long running Yellowknifer newspaper. That experience has inspired him to start a new broadsheet right here in Toronto. Dave sits down with Mark Wigmore in the Jazz FM studios to explain his thinking behind the subscription based “West End Phoenix”
