A Different Side to New York - Parlor Jazz

    Monday, 27 March 2017 13:47

Written by Student Reporter Warren Schlote

Behind the door of a New York apartment lives a woman whose passion for music is matched only by the love she gives to her weekly guests.

Every Sunday for the past quarter-century, Marjorie Eliot has been inviting the public into her Washington Heights home for live jazz.

While the event originally brought in a local audience, word-of-mouth on the internet has led jazz fans to visit Marjorie’s from around the world.

    Everyone is welcome.

A number of folding chairs line the apartment except for one corner that serves as the stage. If more people show up than her apartment can hold, there’s more than enough space in the hallway.

Marjorie incorporates spoken-word poetry into Parlor Jazz with stories that tell of bygone days, toils and triumphs.

It’s best to arrive before Marjorie opens her door at 3 p.m.

The hallway fills up in a hurry, and seating is first-come, first-serve.

And while she doesn’t ask for anything in return for attending, Marjorie graciously accepts donations at the end of the show.

Listen to the full report here:

    Marjorie is at:
