My Three Would Be... Eric Theriault

Every Week as part of Dani Elwell's "Sunday Afternoon Jazz," Dani asks notable personalities from all walks of life what their top three jazz tunes are.

Every once in a while Dani opens "My Three Would Be..." up for the listeners, giving you a chance to chime in with your three top jazz tunes. We love to know what our listeners are listening to and we hope that you do as well!

This week, we open up our email to find listener Eric Theriault.

He writes,

With so much great jazz it is very difficult to simply pick 3.

1) Strange Fruit - Billie Holiday

We often overlook the historical importance of jazz in the human and civil rights movement. And this song is the perfect example of this. With it's vivid imagery and the hauntingly beautiful voice of Billie Holiday this songs needs to be in my top three.

2) Édith Piaff - Les feuilles mortes

Edith's version of Jacques Prévert's "Autumn Leaves." The lyrics in French are simply beautiful, and illustrates the sadness of two parting lovers.

1) Oscar Peterson - Hymn to Freedom

this needs to be the ever and forever Canadian jazz classic. This song and album (Night Train) are what made me fall in love with Jazz. There is nothing that compares to listening to the maharajah of the keyboard doing his thing, especially with this classic song.

Next week it's our very own Juliet Dunn!
