Dylan's Newport Guitar Turns Up in New Jersey

One of the most talked about moments in pop music history occurred July 25th, 1965 when Dylan shocked the world by going "electric" at the Newport Folk Festival.

The 3 song set marked a massive turning point in Dylan's career and helped usher in the late 60s rock revolution.

The guitar that Dylan used during that performance went missing for the next 47 years.

Recently however, a team of PBS researchers discovered the guitar in the New Jersey home of Dawn Peterson. Peterson's father was a private piolot who worked for Dylan's manager in the mid-60s. After a flight he noticed that 3 guitars were left on the plane. After contacting Dylan's people about the guitars, no one got back to him so he took them home.

It was the PBS show History Detectives that helped Peterson verify this was in fact the famous guitar that came along with typed and handwritten lyrics tucked in the case.

Dylan's attorney said that "Bob has possession of the electric guitar he played at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965." but the forensics do not support this claim as guitar experts have compared the guitar to photos and all but confirmed that the guitar in Peterson's possession was in fact "the" guitar.

If real the guitar could have a value in excess of $1 million but Peterson may not legally own the guitar and Dylan may be able to stop or claim the proceeds from any attempted sale of the guitar. For now the guitar remains in a climate controlled safe room while she decides what to do.
