The GTA Bucket List: Guelph

Welcome to the Spring 2018 edition of the GTA Bucket List. This is Senior Arts and Culture Editor Mark Wigmore’s presentation of accessible and affordable travel ideas for those living in Southern Ontario.

Previous episodes traveled to Quebec City, Vermont, Prince Edward County, South Georgian Bay, Ottawa/Outaouais/Montebello and Niagara on the Lake. Those editions of the GTA Bucket List are available at the bottom of this post.

In this edition: An early spring hot skip and a jump to Guelph, Ontario.

Guelph, home of Guelph University, super safe streets, a vibrant arts and culture scene, and a charming city centre with a lovely nod to European architecture.

Guelph is where Scottish poet John Galt set up camp in the early 1800s. Guelph is where the Canadian Communist Party originally organized… in a barn.

Actress Neve Campbell is from Guelph, so is cartoonist Gregory Gallant. But perhaps its most famous citizen; author, doctor and soldier, John McCrae, who wrote the iconic poem, In Flanders Fields. There’s a beautiful monument for McCrae overlooking the city, right near the Basilica of our Lady Immaculate. Both are must sees for tourists.

The intention when making the trip to Guelph was to highlight the arts and culture attractions in the city, and there are many to enjoy. In this mini documentary, Curator Andrew Hunter speaks from The Art Gallery of Guelph, a trip to the Hammond Museum of Radio, a look at the jazz hub, Manhattans, and a trip to The Bookshelf complex, including Miijidaa Cafe and Bistro.

If you have been thinking about visiting for the first time, or someone who hasn’t been there in 20 years, Consider Guelph... just a short trip from Toronto, and well worth it!

Mark would like to thank Guelph Tourism for helping to put together this episode of the GTA Bucket List. Here are some helpful links to the places we visited.
