It’s Friday and that means Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore is here with his top picks for your arts and entertainment weekend ahead.

JAZZ FESTIVALS: KENSINGTON MARKET JAZZ FESTIVAL & GUELPH JAZZ FESTIVAL & BRANTFORD JAZZ FESTIVAL

We have a beautiful weekend on our hands and three jazz festivals to choose from in Southern Ontario.

Torontonians would be hard pressed not to take in something special at the Kensington Market Jazz Festival which runs Friday through Sunday in everyone’s favorite bohemian community centre in the downtown core.

Garvia Bailey spoke to Festival founder Molly Johnson

The festival works as a walk-up event, with cash only at the 20 venues involved. 250 musicians will take part including some of the best this country has to offer.

Check www.KensingtonJazz.com for all the listings.

This year’s Guelph Jazz Festival offers adventurous fare and takes place at venues like The Little Guelph Theatre, The River Run Centre, The University of Guelph, and The Market Square stage, which is free. www.GuelphJazzFestival.com for more info.

And The Brantford International Jazz Festival runs through Sunday with a wide range of shows. The Count Basie Orchestra plays the Sanderson Centre on Saturday night. Also there this weekend, Tommy Ambrose, Carol Welsman, Denielle Bassels and Soul Stew. http://brantfordjazzfestival.com/ for more info.

    TIFF

TIFF wraps up this weekend, but not without hundreds of screenings from Friday through Sunday. Saturday night at the Elgin Theatre, the recently acquired Lady Bird gets an encore screening at the Elgin Theatre.

And if you can find a ticket, critics are raving about the documentary Jane, covering the life of scientist and activist Jane Goodall. It screens Saturday, 9:45am at TIFF Bell Lightbox. Happy TIFF-ing! www.Tiff.net for all the screening times.

    DOORS OPEN ONTARIO

Jazz FM91 was part of Doors Open Toronto earlier this summer, opening our Liberty village doors to hundreds of visitors. Over the next few weeks, locations all over Southern Ontario will join in as Doors Open Ontario continues.

On Saturday, its Doors Open Belleville, East Elgin, Quinte West and Waterloo. On Saturday and Sunday, it’s Doors Open London, Minden Hills and Niagara On the Lake. Check out architecture all over Ontario, and what a weekend for it as well! More info at www.doorsopenontario.on.ca
