JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band Print E-mail

Comprised of students from across Toronto and the surrounding region, the JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band rehearses at the JAZZ.FM91 studios, under the musical direction of Jules Estrin.

The group had their premier performance at the JAZZ LIVES 2008 concert on Thursday, May 8th at Convocation Hall at the University of Toronto. They also appeared at JAZZ LIVES 2009.

Uniforms and instruments are provided, and participation of youth from marginalized areas is expressly encouraged.

Auditions

The JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band will be holding auditions for all positions on the following dates:

  • Saturday September 11th, 2010 - 9:00am-6pm
  • Sunday September 12th, 2010 9:00am-6pm

The JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band was developed to engage young musicians interested in jazz and allow them to develop their talent in a professional environment.

The group presents numerous concerts each year and will rehearse each Saturday at JAZZ.FM91 from 4:30pm-7:30pm.

Auditions will be held at the JAZZ.FM91 studios, located at 4 Pardee Avenue, Unit 100

Students auditioning on saxophone/trumpet/trombone/bass/piano are encouraged to prepare:

  1. Classical etude or study
  2. Jazz melody or bebop head
  3. Improvised solo
  4. Sightreading will be provided

Students auditioning for drums will be asked to play:

  1. Swing feel (varied tempos)
  2. Latin feels (varied tempos)
  3. Rock beat (varied tempos)
  4. Improvised solo
  5. Sightreading will be provided
