I consider Marvin Gaye's What's Going On to be one of the 59795cd0-9c63-4264-98ec-af015b23f044 last great jazz albums. Though technically a soul recording, much of its heart remains deeply rooted in jazz's orchestral tradition and progressive consciousness. The party chatter that opens Gaye's album is akin to the banter near the start of James Moody's Disappointed. Flyin' High has Billie Holiday written all over it. Mercy, Mercy Me and Miles Ahead from Miles Davis'  album of the same name are similar

I was doing some reading the other night and came across an Charlie072 essay by Ross Russell in the September 1960 issue of The Jazz Review. Russell, who had been owner of Dial Records, was reviewing a reissue of the Carnegie Hall concert of September 29, 1947 that featured Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
